Question and answer

Does a tub have to be impregnated?
A wooden tub can be impregnated, for example with linseed oil (supplied) on the outside, but it must not be impregnated on the inside. The wood does not absorb any moisture then and cannot expand, whereby the tub begins to leak. Of course a tub which is always outside will change colour. It becomes greyer. Most people consider this as a more natural colour. The tub fits into your garden area better.

Doesn’t a tub freeze and burst in the winter?
The tub must always be half full of water. If you do not allow this, the wood will dry out and the tub will start to leak.
In the winter it is best to hang an aquarium pump for example in the tub. The circulation prevents the water from freezing.

Can we put salt water in the TÜNNI?
You certainly can put salt water in the TÜNNI. The salt water even preserves the water longer than fresh water. It is, however, possible that some salt remains on the wood after bathing.

What is the life span of a tub?
The life span of a tub depends on various factors.
Firstly, the durability of the wood. One sort of wood is much more durable than another. This is due, among other things, to the tempo of growth of the tree, and the climate in which the tree has grown. Oak is thus more durable than larch, and larch is more durable than Nordic pine. The larch wood which we use comes from Siberia. Due to the slow growth of this wood, this larch is more durable than larch from France. At a rough estimation a Nordic pine tub will last for 8 -10 years. A larch tub lasts for 12 -15 years. You buy an oak tub for your children.
Treatment (continuation of life span)

In addition, durability has to do with how the wood is treated. Treated wood lasts longer, of course, than untreated wood.

What you can do yourself (continuation of life span)?
The position you give the tub also plays a major role.
It is important to position the tub in such a way that prevents direct contact with damp earth. For example, on a stone floor covered by a decking. It is further important always to have water in the tub to prevent drying out. The tub will become grey but many people find this a more natural colour.

”Baden Van Hout” supplies a maintenance product which prolongs the life of the tub.

How long does it take before the water in a TÜNNI is hot?
The time taken to heat up the water in the tub is, of course, dependent on the outdoor temperature. Roughly speaking, it can be said that to reach a temperature of 39 degrees Celsius it takes 2 hours in the summer and 3 to 4 hours in the winter.

Is the wood delivered already treated?
The Tünni is delivered untreated, packed in foil. You must treat the tub yourself on the outside with linseed oil to be supplied. The shower cabin can be delivered already treated with linseed oil. The oak tubs are also delivered untreated.

Do you deliver the tub to our house?
If you wish, we will deliver to your house.
The transport charges depend on distance and the possible combining of transport.

Can the tub be delivered already assembled?
At your request we can assemble the tub for you in situ at extra cost. Prices depend on issues such as the sort of tub and the transport distance.

Is it possible to view a tub?
It is certainly possible to view a tub. You can view people who have bought a tub on request and by appointment. On the page view a tub you can see where a tub has been installed near you.

What is the delivery address?
The delivery address for “Baden Van Hout” is  Doezumertocht 15 in Doezum, The Netherlands. For more information you can contact us.

Isn’t the tub an eyesore in the garden?
To the question whether the Tünni is not an eyesore in the garden, there is only one answer: no; it is even an asset. Through the material and its simplicity (the wood-burning stove certainly has a part in this) the Tünni is a fine contribution to a rural setting. So we don’t want an outside tub with all kinds of electronic gadgets and whistles and bells. We want pure nature. A must for people who love to be outside!!

Isn’t an oak tub a danger to health because of escaping tannic acid?
Tannic acid is released from oak, an acid which ensures among other things the durability of oak. That tannic acid is a health threat is a fable. After all, wine and whisky have been stored in oak barrels for many hundreds of years. Wine and whisky reach a better quality in oak and oak is therefore the “crème de la crème”.
